Different attitudes towards cyclists

I am delighted to see this:

The foot rest reads: "Hi, cyclist! Rest your foot here... and thank you for cycling in the city."

In contrast, a comment by someone reads:
We [drivers] are expected to look out for them [cyclists] knowing that their lives are in our hands. This burden is not something I signed up for when I started driving.

I've been cycling since I was 10, back then I cycle on the roads, and it's still the same now. It's not illegal to ride bikes on the road, and the highway code does list out that you need to watch out for bicycles.

People like to show their right to use the roads by saying they paid road tax. I'm not sure why, cyclists don't damage roads. We don't cause pot-holes or cracks. And to counter that, I pay road tax for my car, you can't assume people who ride bikes don't contribute in a way or another.

Many others listed in the comments, ones who points cyclists at Pulau Ubin for example, really thinks that bikes are just toys where you have fun with, and not as a valid mode of transport.

Road users (car drivers, etc) will only know the value of a bicycle if they got their driving license revoked, or can't afford to drive their vehicle anymore. Then again, they would probably be dead than to buy and be seen riding a bike.
